About the Journal

Journal of Traditional Medicine and Sowa Rigpa (JTMSR)

Journal of Traditional Medicine and Sowa Rigpa  is a publication of the Faculty of Traditional Medicine, Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, Thimphu, Bhutan. Traditional Medicine refers to codified or non-codified systems for health care and well-being, comprising practices, skills, knowledge and philosophies originating in different historical and cultural contexts, which are distinct from and pre-date biomedicine, evolving with science for current use from an experience-based origin. Sowa Rigpa refers to the science of healing that has been in practice in Bhutan since times immemorial. The Sowa Rigpa system of medicine is highly popular and well sought after by people from Bhutan and other countries. With growing research output related to Sowa Rigpa in the country, the Faculty of Traditional Medicine launched the Bhutan Sorig Journal on 17 December 2023 to provide space for researchers and scholars to discuss and disseminate their findings. In May 2026, it was renamed as Journal of Traditional Medicine and Sowa Rigpa to reflect its expanded scope of publication.
